Roberts Radio is a name that has been around since 1932, along time, which is why in my mind it brings “tradition” to mind. Another word I’d use is “heritage”, but I have to be careful because Roberts Radio is not a company of the past. Yes, it was there pioneering in those early days, but it’s still here today doing the same thing. The same thing, but in a different way as the world and technology have changed beyond belief from those early days. You can reads more about the company history at their website.

The [easyazon_link asin=”B000B5TX66″ locale=”UK” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”collinslad-21″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]R9993[/easyazon_link] is a compact radio, yes it’s fairly small which makes it easy to carry around or to pack if you’re travelling. Although small, the sound it produces in reasonably good. I wouldn’t say its brilliant but given the size, I’d say its more than adequate.
If you want DAB, forget this radio as it has three wavebands – MW, LW and FM. The problem with portable DAB radios is that they’re not really portable, well they are, as long as you’re near a mains supply. I know you can now get battery powered DAB radios but they tend to suck the juice out of their batteries very quickly. No problem with the [easyazon_link asin=”B000B5TX66″ locale=”UK” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”collinslad-21″ add_to_cart=”yes” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”no”]R9993[/easyazon_link] as it runs on four AA batteries which last a surprisingly long time, depending on the type of batteries you buy.
Here’s some of the features from the manufacturer:
- LW / MW / FM wavebands
- Angled top panel for ease of use
- Dial tuning system
- LED power indicator
- Carrying strap
- Headphone socket
- DC input socket
- Batteries 4 x LR6 (‘AA’ size)
- Size (mm) 195(w) x 115(h) x 50(d)
- Weight 0.42kg
What are the pros and cons?
The [easyazon_link asin=”B000B5TX66″ locale=”UK” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”collinslad-21″ add_to_cart=”yes” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”no”]R9993[/easyazon_link] is very easy to use, there not really any need for instructions as operating it speaks for itself. The batteries are easy to insert and stay in place, unlike some devices where they “jump” out as soon as you try to put them in the holder. Battery power is good, but an AC power supply is available, but disappointingly not supplied.
It’s fairly small, hence convenient to carry around. The style is somewhat retro, but in a modern stylish way which, I think, makes its appearance reassuringly traditional yet cool looking too.
Reception from the three bands is very good, although that does depend on your location. Scanning the dial is simple, although numbers on the dial don’t seem to accurately represent the frequency you’re looking for. To be fair, most radios in my experience are like that, the numbers tend to be more of a guide than the exact location of the station you’re looking for. Most people are probably used to tuning around looking for the name of the station rather than frequency, but it’s the old fashioned method on this radio. The ariel folds away neatly, but with both of these radios I’ve had, the ariels broke fairly early in their life. The screw that fixes the ariel to the body tends to come loose over time due to the swivelling needed to tune FM stations properly.
Conclusion
Having had two of these radios over the years says a lot to me. The [easyazon_link asin=”B000B5TX66″ locale=”UK” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”collinslad-21″ add_to_cart=”yes” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”no”]Roberts R9993[/easyazon_link] is a very good radio from a world renowned UK manufacturer who’s reputation is second to none. It performs well, is really convenient because of its size and both mine proved very reliable over time. I recommend this radio and at the price you’ll pay, you just can’t go wrong.
